Albert A. Nelson, Jr., of Norfolk, Virginia, known by many as “Junie” passed away at the age of 98 on Sunday, December 3, 2023 after a short battle, yet long struggle with congestive heart failure. He was preceded in death by his parents Ethel and Albert A. Nelson, beloved wife Minnie Nelson, and step-son Michael “Doug” Platte.
Albert is survived by his step-son Raymond Platte III and wife Deborah, grandson Raymond Platte IV, granddaughter Tia Platte, great-grandson Noah Platte, great-granddaughter Amanda Platte McFadden (James), and great-great granddaughter Addison McFadden.
Junie left behind so many great friends, particularly two of his closest life-long buddies: Barry and BJ who he considered like sons; and “Nogger”, his VFW friend, who helped him in his day to day life. The family would also like to give special thanks to Isaac Williams who accompanied him on his last honorable Veterans trip to the National WWII Museum in New Orleans sponsored by the Gary Sinse Foundation.
Junie was a WWII Army Veteran and a retiree of the Norfolk Fire Department where he was a firefighter/Captain of the Master Mechanic Shop. He designed and built many race cars inspired by his passion for mechanical engineering. He loved racing, antique cars, cruise-ins’ good food and his family. He was later involved with the Veterans of Foreign Wars where he enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow veterans.
A public graveside service will be held on Monday, December 18th at 11am located at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby St., Norfolk. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1pm at the VFW, 5728 Bartee St., Norfolk, Virginia 23502. Both are open to family and friends.
