January 1, 1932 - April 1, 2024

Memorial Gifts & Donations

Dorothy Marcella Spady Robins (Dolly), 92, of Henrico, North Carolina, peacefully passed away on April 1, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.

Dolly was born in January 1932, to Amos and Hattie Spady in Norfolk, Virginia. She graduated from Hampton High School in January 1949. In early 1951, she eloped with the love of her life, Willard Fayette Robins, Jr., affectionally known as Fay or Grampy. Dolly and Fay went on to have three children, Willard Fayette Robins, III, (Bill), Arthur Jerome Robins (Jerry) and Cindy Lynn Lamm.

After many years as a homemaker and piano teacher, Dolly pursued a degree in education at The College of William and Mary and then worked as an educator for several decades. She was passionate about special education and retired as a Supervisor of Special Education from Hampton Public Schools. Dolly loved what she did for a living and loved telling stories of the people she met, worked with, and taught.

Dolly bought a patch of land on a whim in the 1950’s in Virginia Beach. Ready to sell in the 1970’s, she posted a for sale sign on the telephone pole only to have the phone ringing when she returned home. She sold the plot, in the middle of what is now the Virginia Beach boardwalk area to purchase an undeveloped parcel of land on Lake Gaston in the 1970s. This beloved lake property became the gathering place for multiple generations of family, boy scout troops, church youth groups and family reunions. As soon as she retired, Dolly moved full time to Lake Gaston. She was an active participant in the Lakeland Singers, the Gastonettes, the Ladies Club, and the Garden Club. She participated in weekly tai chi until January 2024. Most of all, Dolly was Granny and loved watching her family, including her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and all of their friends make lifetime memories on the lake. It wasn’t a trip to the lake without Granny’s sausage pinwheels and water skiing.

Dolly was predeceased by her parents, Amos and Hattie Spady, her husband, Willard Fayette Robins, Jr., her brother Amos Spady, Jr., her son, Arthur Jerome Robins, her daughter-in-law, Cathy Garcia, her granddaughter, Talitha Robins and great granddaughter Rowan Stoops. She is survived by her son, Willard Fayette Robins, III (Karen), her daughter, Cindy Lamm (Tony) and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.
