JoAnn “Nonna” Schutze, 81, of Norfolk, Virginia passed away peacefully on October 22, 2023, in Norfolk, Virginia. She was born on June 15, 1942, in Huntington, NY to the late Dr. Max and Mary Fand. She was known for her kind heart, gentle spirit, and unwavering love for her family.
JoAnn will be deeply missed by her surviving family members, including her brother Bill Fand, her daughter Lynne Ropetski and husband Richard, her son Christopher Schutze and wife Leslie, as well as her grandchildren Dylan, Roan, Haley, Joanna, and Bella. As a mother, JoAnn was nurturing and supportive. She always put her children first and provided them with a loving and stable home. JoAnn’s dedication to her family extended to her role as a Nonna. She treasured her grandchildren and embraced every opportunity to spend time with them, creating cherished memories that will be forever remembered.
JoAnn attended Walt Whitman High School and later pursued her higher education at Russel Sage College and Virginia Commonwealth University. She had a fulfilling career with Catholic Charities of Richmond, where she made a positive impact on countless lives.
JoAnn had a passion for sewing, crafting, cooking, and gardening. She spent countless hours creating beautiful pieces and sharing her talents with loved ones. Her creativity and attention to detail were evident in every project she undertook. JoAnn also had a passion for cooking. She found joy and fulfillment in creating delicious meals for her loved ones. Her culinary skills brought people together and created lasting memories. Her gardening included growing her own herbs and vegetables she used in her recipes.
JoAnn found solace and community at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where she worshipped and found comfort in her faith. She was also a leader and teacher for the middle school EDGE program and vacation bible school.
JoAnn will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her warm smile, kind heart, and unwavering love will forever be remembered. She leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of love and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in JoAnn’s memory.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate JoAnn’s life on Saturday November 4th at 11am.

So sorry to learn of JoAnn’s passing. She was such a wonderful person and I enjoyed working with her in the Edge program when I attended Blessed Sacrament. My thoughts and prayers will go out for her family.
